When to plant
Plant after last frost, same as standard tomatoes. Cherry tomatoes mature faster (55–70 days) and keep producing longer into fall, making them one of the best value plants for a summer garden.
Soil & site
Same as standard tomatoes: pH 6.2–6.8, compost-rich, deeply worked soil. Cherry tomatoes are slightly more forgiving of less-than-perfect soil but still benefit from good drainage and organic matter.
Feeding
Feed as for standard tomatoes. Cherry tomatoes are prolific producers so consistent feeding (every 2 weeks once flowering) maintains energy through a long season. A potassium-rich fertilizer improves sweetness.
Common problems
Splitting after rain (mulch and consistent watering prevents this). Blossom drop in heat above 35°C — mist in the evening. Whiteflies on undersides of leaves — use yellow sticky traps and neem oil.
When to harvest
Cherry tomatoes are ready when they're fully coloured and come off the cluster with the lightest touch. If you have to pull at all, give them another day. They should feel firm but not rock-hard, and burst with juice when bitten.
How to harvest
Harvest entire clusters (trusses) with scissors, or pick individual fruits. Check every 1–2 days at peak season — cherry tomatoes left too long split and attract fruit flies. Early morning is best for sweetest flavour.
Storage & use
Store unwashed at room temperature in a single layer for up to 5 days. For longer storage, freeze whole (they're great in cooked dishes). Or halve and sun-dry/dehydrate for intense flavour.
Companion planting
Basil repels aphids and improves flavor. Plant marigolds to deter nematodes.
