When to plant
Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost or sow direct after frost. Marigolds bloom continuously from summer through frost and are one of the best low-maintenance companion plants for the vegetable garden.
Soil & site
Marigolds are tolerant of poor soil — excessive richness produces all leaves and few flowers. Well-drained soil of average fertility is ideal. pH 5.8–7.0. They also grow well in containers.
Feeding
Light feeders. A single balanced fertilizer application at planting is usually all they need. Too much nitrogen results in lush foliage and sparse flowering.
Common problems
Powdery mildew in crowded, humid conditions. Spider mites in hot, dry weather — spray with water. Slugs at the seedling stage. Botrytis (grey mould) in cool, wet conditions — improve air circulation.
When to harvest
Flowers are ready to harvest when fully open and at their colour peak. For deadheading, remove flowers as soon as petals start to fall to keep plants blooming. For seed saving, leave some flowers until the base turns brown and papery.
How to harvest
Snip flower heads just below the bloom with scissors. Deadhead spent flowers weekly — this signals the plant to produce more blooms. For seeds: allow a few heads to mature fully (base brown, petals dried), pull apart and dry the seed-filled central portion for 1–2 weeks before storing.
Storage & use
Fresh cut marigolds last 5–7 days in a vase. Dried marigold petals can be used in cooking and natural dye — dry on a screen in a warm, ventilated spot for 2 weeks. Store dried petals in an airtight jar.
