When to plant
Direct sow in fall or stratify seeds in the refrigerator for 3–4 weeks before spring sowing. Blooms in spring to early summer. Perennial in zones 3–9. Self-seeds reliably — once established, you will always have columbines without replanting.
Soil & site
Average to moderately fertile, well-drained soil. pH 5.5–7.0. Tolerates clay and rocky soils. Does not like waterlogged conditions. Work in compost for very poor soils. Generally adaptable and undemanding.
Feeding
Minimal — a light balanced fertilizer in spring is plenty. Rich soil encourages leafy growth and reduces flowering. In most garden soils, no fertilizer is needed at all.
Common problems
Leaf miners create winding tunnels in leaves (mainly cosmetic — remove affected leaves). Powdery mildew in late summer. Columbine sawfly caterpillars defoliate plants. Plants are short-lived (2–3 years) but self-seed freely to replace themselves.
When to harvest
For cut flowers: harvest when the first buds on a stem are just opening. For seeds: let seed pods dry completely on the plant until they are brown and papery — the pods split at the tip and release small, shiny black seeds. A gentle shake or tap will tell you if seeds are loose and ready.
How to harvest
Cut flower stems near the base. For seed collection, snip entire dried pods into a paper bag before they fully split and scatter. Store seeds dry in a paper envelope. Deadheading spent flowers extends the bloom period; leaving them allows self-seeding and naturalizing.
Storage & use
Fresh cut flowers last 5–7 days in water. Dried seed heads are attractive in arrangements. Seeds stored in a dry envelope remain viable 2–3 years. All parts of the plant contain low levels of toxic compounds — not for consumption.
