When to plant
Plant outdoors after all frost risk has passed and soil temperature is above 18°C. Cucumbers are fast-growing (50–70 days from transplant) and do not tolerate any frost. Succession plant every 3 weeks for continuous harvest through summer.
Soil & site
Cucumbers need warm, well-drained, fertile soil. Work in compost deeply. pH 6.0–7.0. They grow well on a trellis which improves air circulation, makes harvest easier, and keeps fruits straight. Warm soil (above 18°C) is essential — plant in a sunny, sheltered spot.
Feeding
Feed with a balanced fertilizer every 2 weeks throughout the season. Once flowering, increase potassium for fruit quality. Cucumbers are heavy drinkers and feeders — consistent moisture and nutrition are more important than for most other vegetables.
Common problems
Cucumber beetle (yellow/black striped or spotted beetles — use row cover early in season, remove when flowering for pollination). Powdery mildew in hot dry weather — improve air circulation. Bitter cucumbers from water stress — keep evenly moist. Mosaic virus (mottled leaves) from aphids — control aphids early.
When to harvest
Slicing cucumbers are ready at 15–20 cm long; pickling types at 5–8 cm. Skin should be bright, firm, and dark green — avoid yellow cucumbers which are over-ripe, bitter, and signal the plant to stop producing. The blossom end should still be slightly soft.
How to harvest
Cut cucumbers from the vine with pruners — never twist or pull. Leave 1–2 cm of stem. Check every 2 days at peak season. Harvest aggressively: cucumbers left on the vine signal the plant to slow down. One missed cucumber can noticeably reduce total yield.
Storage & use
Store at 10–13°C (not below — cold injury turns them mushy). The refrigerator is too cold for long storage — use the vegetable drawer set to a warmer setting, or keep on a cool countertop for 3–5 days. Cucumbers are 95% water and don't freeze well raw. Pickle excess harvest in a brine or vinegar solution.
Companion planting
Nasturtiums repel aphids and cucumber beetles. Sunflowers provide beneficial shade.
