When to plant
Direct sow in fall or early spring. Biennial: first year is a rosette of fuzzy leaves; second year sends up a tall (4–8 feet) flower spike. Self-seeds readily. Hardy in zones 3–9. Grows in almost any climate and soil. Common roadside plant throughout North America and Europe.
Soil & site
Poor to average, dry, rocky, or gravelly soil. pH 6.0–8.0. Excellent drainage is essential. Mullein thrives on neglect and in difficult conditions where almost nothing else grows. Does not need any soil amendment.
Feeding
No fertilizer needed. Grows as a weed in roadsides and dry fields — it is adapted to very low fertility. Adding nutrients causes lush, floppy growth out of character with the plant.
Common problems
Very few pest or disease problems. Can self-seed aggressively and become invasive — remove flower spikes before seeds set if you want to limit spread. Mullein weevil in some regions. Generally an incredibly tough and carefree plant.
When to harvest
Leaves are harvested at any point during the first year rosette stage — large, mature leaves (12–18 inches) are most useful. Flowers are harvested when freshly open from the spike. Seeds are ready when the pods on the lower spike have browned and are dry. Second-year plants produce the tall flower spike.
How to harvest
Harvest leaves by cutting the whole leaf from the base. For flowers, pick individual small yellow flowers from the spike in the morning. Dry leaves flat on screens at low temperature — they are thick and take 1–2 weeks to dry fully. Dry flowers quickly to prevent mold.
Storage & use
Dried leaves store in an airtight jar for 1 year. Used as a traditional herbal remedy — leaf tea used for respiratory support. Dried leaves can be used in fire-making (the dried stalk makes an excellent friction fire spindle). Not for internal use without guidance from an herbal practitioner.
