When to plant
Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost. Plant transplants outdoors in early spring — delphiniums need cool weather to establish. They thrive in cool summers; struggle in heat. Planted in spring, they bloom early-to-midsummer.
Soil & site
Rich, well-drained, deeply prepared soil. pH 6.5–7.0. Dig in generous amounts of compost. Delphiniums have deep roots and benefit from deep soil preparation (18 inches). Excellent drainage is critical — wet soil causes crown rot. In windy areas, stake plants before they need it.
Feeding
Heavy feeder. Apply balanced fertilizer in early spring when shoots emerge. Side-dress with compost or apply liquid fertilizer monthly during the growing season. After the first flush of bloom, fertilize again to encourage the second flush.
Common problems
Slugs and snails devour young shoots (use barriers or iron phosphate bait). Powdery mildew is extremely common in summer — improve air circulation, choose resistant varieties. Crown rot in wet or heavy soils. Bacterial black spot. All parts of the plant are toxic — wear gloves when working with them.
When to harvest
For cut flowers: harvest when the bottom third of the flower spike is open and the remaining buds are showing color. This gives the longest vase life. For seeds: let the seed pods dry on the plant until brown and papery — seeds inside turn black when ready. Entire spikes ripen from bottom to top.
How to harvest
Cut flower spikes with a sharp knife at an angle, leaving at least one or two leaf nodes on the stem to encourage a second flush of bloom. Immediately put in cold water. After the main spike finishes blooming, cut it off and side shoots will often bloom again in fall. For seeds, shake dried pods into a bag.
Storage & use
Cut flowers last 5–7 days in a vase. Dried flower spikes can be used in arrangements. Seeds stored cool and dry remain viable for 1 year. Perennial in zones 3–7; short-lived in warm climates. Often treated as annuals in warm zones.
