When to plant
Direct sow outdoors 2–4 weeks before last frost — seeds need cool temperatures to germinate. Self-sows readily and often returns yearly. Excellent for spring and fall gardens. In hot climates, sow in fall for winter/spring bloom.
Soil & site
Thrives in average to poor soil — rich soil produces lots of foliage with fewer flowers. Well-drained, slightly alkaline soil (pH 6.5–7.0). Excellent for challenging dry spots in the garden. Directly sow where they'll grow — transplanting disturbs the taproot.
Feeding
Minimal — one light application at planting is plenty. High-fertility soil = tall, floppy plants with few flowers. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers.
Common problems
Aphids on new growth — spray with water or neem oil. Powdery mildew in humid conditions (space plants for air circulation). Aster yellows disease (distorted flowers — remove affected plants, control leafhoppers). Generally very hardy and trouble-free.
When to harvest
For cut flowers: harvest when the central flower is just beginning to open but before it fully unfurls — this maximizes vase life. For seeds: let flowers dry completely on the plant until the seed head becomes papery and grey-silver. Seeds are ready when they pull free easily.
How to harvest
Cut stems in the morning with sharp scissors, cutting just above a leaf node to encourage branching and more blooms. For seeds, snip entire dried heads into a bag. Store seeds in a paper envelope in a cool, dry place — they're easy to save year to year. Deadheading (removing spent blooms) significantly extends flowering.
Storage & use
Fresh cut flowers last 7–10 days in water with a clean cut and fresh water every 2 days. Flowers can be dried by hanging bunches upside down. Dried petals used in potpourri. Edible petals add color to salads — mildly spicy.
