When to plant
Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost (like tomatoes). Transplant after all frost risk has passed and soil is warm. Warm-season crop with a 70–80 day growing season. Extremely productive — one or two plants provide huge yields.
Soil & site
Average to fertile, well-drained soil. pH 6.0–7.0. Work in compost. Very adaptable and easy to grow — similar care requirements to tomatoes. Warm soil is essential for germination and strong growth.
Feeding
Moderate feeder similar to tomatoes. Balanced fertilizer at planting, then switch to a lower-nitrogen formula when flowers appear. Monthly feeding through the season. Too much nitrogen produces foliage at the expense of fruits.
Common problems
Aphids, flea beetles, hornworms. Colorado potato beetles. Powdery mildew in late season. Self-seeds aggressively — a feature or pest depending on your perspective. Very few serious problems overall.
When to harvest
The fruit is ripe when the papery husk turns from green to tan or brown and becomes very dry. The berry inside should be golden-yellow. The husk will naturally drop to the ground when ripe — you can let them fall and collect from the ground daily.
How to harvest
Pick up fallen fruits from the ground every 1–3 days, or check the plant for husks that are completely dry and slightly loose. Do not remove the husk until ready to eat or use. The husk protects the fruit and allows it to store much longer than without it.
Storage & use
In their husks at room temperature: several weeks to months. In the refrigerator: 2–3 months in husks. Remove husks just before using. Excellent fresh, in jams, pies, and salsas. Flavor described as pineapple-vanilla-tomato.
