When to plant
Start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost, or direct sow after soil reaches 70 degrees F. Needs a long, hot season (80–100 days). Full sun essential. In zones 4–6, use row covers in spring and choose early varieties. Honeydew needs more heat than cantaloupes to develop good sweetness.
Soil & site
Rich, sandy loam or loamy soil with excellent drainage. pH 6.0–6.5. Work in generous compost. Melons need very warm soil (70 degrees F and above) to grow well — use black plastic mulch to warm the bed. Raised beds drain and warm faster.
Feeding
Heavy feeder. Apply balanced fertilizer at planting. Switch to lower-nitrogen, higher-potassium fertilizer when plants begin flowering and fruiting. Potassium is critical for sugar development and flavor. Weekly liquid feeding during fruit development pays dividends in sweetness.
Common problems
Cucumber beetles (spread bacterial wilt — most serious problem). Powdery mildew. Aphids. Squash vine borers. Inconsistent watering near harvest causes cracking. Short-season climates make it difficult to grow full-size honeydew — choose early varieties.
When to harvest
Unlike cantaloupes, honeydew melons do not slip from the vine when ripe. The blossom end softens slightly and yields to gentle pressure. The skin color transitions from green-white to creamy yellow-white. A sweet faint melon scent develops at the blossom end. The skin texture becomes slightly waxy.
How to harvest
Cut from the vine with a knife or pruners, leaving a short stem — honeydew does not self-detach. If unsure of ripeness, wait 2–3 more days and check again. Refrigerate immediately after harvest. Honeydews continue to soften but not sweeten after picking, so harvest on the cusp of ripeness.
Storage & use
Whole at room temperature: 1–2 weeks. Refrigerator after cutting: 3–5 days covered. Honeydew does not freeze well fresh but can be pureed and frozen for smoothies. High water content makes it refreshing for fresh eating, juicing, and fruit salads.
